Hulu: An Olive Branch
Dear Hulu,
I don’t have much time today, but wanted to extend an olive branch of sorts. Don’t get me wrong: we still have some fundamental disagreements to work through. For example, I cannot buy into your business model, and I hope you understand why you’re wrong to consider Hulu.com as a rival to your regular channels instead a complement.
However, you have been very good to me during these weeks without a regular television option, and I feel I should return the favor. You have made a tiny tactical error that I believe can be quickly remedied. It’s just my way of saying thank you.
You have, you’ll recall, a fairly prominent message that indicates certain programming is available for download or purchase on DVD. However, you neglect to include links to facilitate these purchases. See, like, someone who was watching ”’The Bob Newhart Show”’ the other night might have seen that message and thought, “Hmm, maybe I would like to make this purchase”, only to discover there were no associated links.
That person might be motivated enough to do all the work necessary to find the download or DVD option (hoping, of course, that brighter, shinier things don’t distract her), or she might shrug and decide her hard-earned money didn’t need to be spent at that time.
I am not able to predict how much money you might make by offering easy purchasing options to your customers, but I imagine that any increase in sales — especially for catalog product — is welcome. All you have to do is make it easy on people like me.
So long and thanks for all the fish,
Kassia
