Why Do I Find It So Hard to Commit?
One night a week. Thirty minutes, maybe an hour. Yet, I can’t seem to do it. Something came up at work. Dinner ran a little long. Just excuses to mask the fact that I can’t truly commit to any t.v. show for the regular season. (Goodbye, Gilmore Girls. You were the only one.) So, I play catch-up and try to make up for that lost time.
Oh, but I’m not the only commitment-phobe. Scott and I have started to watch Weeds and I guess that only puts us about two years behind everyone else. The benefit to having no furniture in our living room is that Scott can “borrow” the projector from work and we can finally put our blank wall to good use. It feels like an event- for this night only, we will be showing… - and perhaps, it is our way of making up and showing our shows that we do care. And then, we get it. So this is what everyone has been talking about. What’s not to love about a suburban pot-dealing mom? And we watch obsessively for three nights, maybe four. And we talk about how we can’t for the new season to begin. Then, the new season arrives and we just can’t do it. We know that we aren’t going to be there every Monday at 10:00 p.m. Oh, I was just too tired to stay up. Got caught up in something for work. The cycle begins again.
It’s happened before. Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Battlestar Gallactica, The Office. It will happen again. So welcome back summer shows. We’ll watch you. At some point.

Okay, I am only going to say this one: TiVo. TiVo is your friend. It will be, over time, your best friend. With a friend like TiVo, you don’t need commitment. TiVo commits for you. All you have to do is tell TiVo that you like this program or might be interested in that program and TiVo does all the intermediary stuff. With Tivo, you can commit without actually settling down.
Trust me. I have hardly ever lied to you.

That show is evil..it’s enough to make me actually want to get cable again. I’ll be sending Scott a bill shortly, as I blame him for this obsession.

I’ve always thought my daughters should be committed. (Hmm, that can’t be right. Oh, well.) I agree, Kassia, that TiVo is the way to go. Well, actually I have Dish, but consider it TiVo without the sound effects. Ahh, if only real life had those same “pause”, “rewind”, “fast forward” and “delete” options.
